Что-то непонятное с line-height

Имеется такой пример:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC  "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">

<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" >
<title>Пример</title>
<style>
  DIV
  {
	width:100px;
	height:300px;
	background-color:#CCC;
	line-height:12px;
  }
  SPAN
  {
	color:#F00;
	background-color:#CC0;
	font:12px/12px "Lucida Console";
	margin:0px;
  }
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div>
  <span>слова слова слова слова слова слова слова слова слова</span>
</div>
</body>
</html>

В мозиле, опере и хроме непонятные промежутки в 3 пикселя между сторками. В ИЕ6,7 тоже самое но только в последней строке.

Если Вместо "Lucida Console" взять другой шрифт, например "Courier New" то промежутков не становится.

Кто-нибудь сталкивался с таким? Можно это побороть?

М.б. я не понял смысл рисунка, но вопрос был несколько в другом. Смотри новый пример, там видны отличия:

У меня в опере этот пример выглядит так:

У меня непонятных промежутков нет.

А что за система у тебя?
