Вы как разработчик должны уметь работать со средой и сервером на уровне файловой системы и стандартных приложений, как минимум зайти через ssh на сервер и распаковать архив, создать или загрузить дамп базы, подправить настройки (php, web-сервера и т.п.) и т.д.

Ну это достаточно частое явление, что надо клиенту развернуть VDS, накатить всё ПО, всё настроить и запустить. Для этого не нужен сисадмин, так как знания нужны минимальные и все базовые вещи можно изучить за пару дней. Знать надо всё, что может понадобиться для размешения сайта. Например, вот это:

• Как работать с файлами: tar, chown , chmod...

• Как поставить и настроить для правильной работы серверы: Apache, Nginx, MySQL, PHP...

• Как предоставить и разграничить доступ: FTP, SSH...

• Как поставить и настроить прочее нужное ПО imagemagick, ffmpeg, sphinx, memcached...

Вот это примерный минимум, который стоит знать хотя бы на уровне установки из deb/rpm
