php в таблице html

Здраствуйте, у меня есть html таблица, в ней тег [xfvalue_opisanie] (дополгительное поле DLE)

Мне нужно ограничить количество символов в этом поле.

нашел php script

function getPrewText( $text, $maxwords = 60, $maxchar = 50 )
{
        $text  = strip_tags( $text );
        $words = split( ' ', $text );
        $text='';
        foreach ($words as $word){                {
                        if (mb_strlen($text.' '.$word)<$maxchar)
                        {$text.=' '.$word; }
                                else 
                        {$text.='...';break;};
         }
 return $text;

как и куда мне его нада вставлять? Помогите пожалуйста.

Ставь это посреди тега <body> и </body> но ни в коем случае не в <head> </head>

мне наверно надо было сказать, что таблица находится в shortstory.tpl

собственно вот она:
